About Ciudad Real

Located in the heart of Spain, Ciudad Real will host the 8th edition of the International Conference on Smart Energy Systems and Technologies (SEST 2026).

The city is well connected to Madrid, Toledo, Córdoba and Granada by high-speed train (AVE) and major highways, making it both accessible and peaceful — the perfect setting for international academic exchange.

It was founded in 1255 by King Alfonso X of Castile, known as «Alfonso the Wise», who envisioned a strong administrative center in La Mancha. To protect the settlement, he ordered the construction of an imposing city wall, remnants of which can still be seen today.

Throughout the Middle Ages, Ciudad Real became a melting pot of Christians, Jews, and Muslims, and flourished as a center of commerce and learning.

Its historical legacy is still visible in landmarks such as:

  • The Puerta de Toledo, a majestic 14th-century city gate that was part of the medieval fortifications.
  • The Cathedral of Santa María del Prado, a harmonious mix of Gothic and Baroque architecture.
  • Sections of the original city wall, still preserved in the old town.

Beyond its medieval roots, Ciudad Real lies in the land of Don Quixote, the literary hero created by Cervantes.
The surrounding landscapes — with windmills, plains, and historical towns — inspired some of the most famous passages of Don Quixote de la Mancha.

As part of SEST 2026’s social and cultural program, participants will enjoy a visit to the nearby town of Almagro,
home to the Corral de Comedias, the only surviving 17th-century open-air theatre in Europe, and venue of the acclaimed International Classical Theatre Festival.

This blend of scientific innovation, historical depth, and cultural richness makes Ciudad Real a unique and inspiring venue for SEST 2026.
